CTE Foundation and Sonoma County Office of Education Launch Countywide High School Internship Program: Path to Purpose, with County as Official Employer Partner
⠀

⠀
Career Technical Education (CTE) Foundation, in partnership with the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE), has launched Path to Purpose, a first of its kind countywide high school internship program designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world career experience.
⠀
This innovative program provides equitable access to high-quality internships for high school juniors and seniors, offering a minimum of 40+ hours of real-world learning during the Spring semester, with the opportunity to earn college credit.
⠀
“Path to Purpose is about preparing young people for their future while making sure that industries across Sonoma County — from agriculture and wine to healthcare, manufacturing, small business, nonprofits, and even government — have access to a pipeline of motivated, career-ready talent,” said Eli Weinzveg, Executive Director of CTE Foundation. “The program makes it easy for students and employers to connect in ways that strengthen both our workforce and our community.”
⠀
The program is the culmination of a year-long effort by CTE Foundation, SCOE, and regional workforce partners such as the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber, to create a regional framework that meets the demand from local high schools that are expanding their career pathway programs. Several meetings that included a broad range of stakeholders examined the barriers and opportunities for both students, educational institutions and employers that led to the program elements for this year’s pilot.
⠀
“We’re not just creating internships; we’re building a meaningful, work-based program that’s grounded in ensuring equitable access to high-quality learning,” said Dr. Amie Carter, Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools. “Through our collaboration with the CTE Foundation, we can ensure that work-based learning links classroom experiences to our dynamic regional economy. This countywide effort will ensure our schools are developing a workforce that reflects our community’s rich diversity.”
⠀
CTE Foundation has secured nearly 40 employers who have agreed to host nearly 100 interns. Internships are offered across many industries including social services, healthcare, agriculture and construction trades, and within companies who have one to more than 100 employees. The County of Sonoma, the region’s largest employer, has joined as one of the first official employer partners in Path to Purpose. The County is helping set the standard for public sector involvement and showcasing how local employers can play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of Sonoma County’s workforce.
⠀
“The County of Sonoma is proud to partner in this innovative effort to prepare our young people for meaningful careers,” said County Board of Supervisors Chair and Fifth District Supervisor Lynda Hopkins. “As the county’s largest employer, we know the importance of connecting students with these opportunities and experiences that not only build their skills but also strengthen our local industries and workforce. Path to Purpose will help ensure that every student can discover their potential while contributing to the future of Sonoma County.”
⠀
What Makes Path to Purpose Unique:
- Centralized Student Application: Students apply once to be considered for multiple internship opportunities.
- Customized Matching: Interns are placed based on several criteria, including career interests, availability and goals.
- Support for Employers: Optional monthly workshops, on-call guidance and ready-to-use resources.
- Equity-Driven Approach: Designed to eliminate barriers so all students—regardless of background—can access meaningful opportunities.
⠀
Beyond offering valuable work experience to students, Path to Purpose also makes it easy for local businesses to participate. By streamlining the process, from intern vetting and placement to legal and logistical support, the program removes barriers and empowers employers to invest in the next generation of Sonoma County’s workforce.
⠀
“Sonoma County’s future depends on the strength of its workforce. Path to Purpose creates a bridge between our local businesses and the next generation of talent — giving employers an easy, meaningful way to mentor students while building the pipeline of skilled workers our community needs.” said Ananda Sweet, Chief Executive Officer of the Santa Rosa Metro Chamber.
⠀
The program officially launches this Fall, with student internships beginning in Spring 2026.
